Easingwold Outdoor Centre
Community Survey

Places to build dens and clean toilets are the most important requirements for the Easingwold Outdoor Centre, according to a survey of hundreds of young people.

More than 300 under-18s and 85 teachers and youth group leaders completed the survey, rating the importance of everything from green power to hot showers. Youngsters and their leaders agreed that top of the list was outdoor space for activities and home comforts in the shape of clean toilets and wash basins with hot water.

Under 18s were asked to rate the importance of facilities by ticking a smiley face, an expressionless face or a grumpy face. Eight out of ten gave hot showers a smiley face - and the same proportion of leaders asked for showers too.

The site's quiet, rural location and the potential to use renewable energy were both rated as important or very important by most group leaders. Out of seven local primary schools that responded, all wanted green credentials - along with a kitchen for making hot drinks.

Nursery schools and primary schools are attracted by the ability to light camp fires, while more than three quarters of school groups would like to camp if some equipment can be provided for them.

More than half of the Scout and Guide Groups that filled in the survey would like to use the Centre during the winter, with two thirds requesting cooking facilities in the kitchen.

The biggest difference between under-18s and their leaders was highlighted by new technology: just 4% of leaders want wireless Internet available on the site, but 67% of youngsters gave the idea a smiley face.
